Transitioning from an Access course to higher education is a significant and rewarding step, but it can also come with challenges. As an Access student, you might be balancing work, family, and other commitments while preparing for your next educational move.

Our recent Access to HE Webinar featured expert insights from Walbrook and invaluable contributions from representatives of OCN London and LASER, both deeply committed to empowering Access students through every step of their educational journey.

Whether you attended the webinar live or are catching up on the highlights, here’s a look at some of the key topics we discussed.

1. Navigate the path from Access course to HE with success

Moving from an Access course to higher education can be confusing. But it’s easier when you know the steps. We explored how you can make the most of the skills and experiences you've gained so far, and where to find support services – such as tailored UCAS advice – to help you successfully navigate this transition. The session emphasised practical steps to ensure you feel prepared and confident as you move forward.

2. Choosing the right degree for your future

Choosing the right degree is an important decision, and we offered insights into how to align your choice with your career goals. We discussed the importance of researching different degree options, understanding flexibility in learning, and identifying subjects that match both your interests and job market trends. With these considerations, you can make a well-informed choice about your future studies.

Walbrook's courses offer great flexibility for Access to HE students with the 3, 4 or 6 year study options. Being able to study online means you can study from anywhere and when you like, even if you have rigid timetables, care responsibilities or work requirements.

3. Applying to higher education

Understanding the application process is essential. We broke it down into simple, actionable steps, from knowing deadlines to meeting entry requirements. A key takeaway was that you can apply directly to Walbrook without going through UCAS, providing a streamlined option. We also discussed how your experiences as an Access student can enhance your application, showcasing your unique perspective to admissions teams.

4. Why online learning at Walbrook works for Access students

For many Access students, flexibility is key to balancing education with life’s demands. Our 100% online degrees are designed to offer you the freedom to study at your own pace, whether part-time or full-time. With resources like 24/7 access to tutorials and support from personal tutors, our online programmes make it easier to fit learning around your schedule without sacrificing quality or support.

Flexibility and the ability to manage your studies around life commitments is so important in your degree, and I think online studies gives you that opportunity. Always weigh up the pros and cons, but the courses and support at Walbrook are designed for mature learners, much like an Access to HE course, making it a really good fit.
