Studying online has its perks – flexibility, freedom, and the comfort of learning from home. But we know from speaking with our students that home isn’t always the easiest place to focus. It can be full of distractions and sometimes feels a bit samey when it’s your only study spot.
Like anything in life, a change of scene can make all the difference. Sometimes you need peace and quiet to concentrate. Other times, a bit of background buzz helps you feel more energised and creative.
So if you’re looking to mix things up, here are some great study spaces to try – many of which have come straight from our students.
Best study spaces for online students

Local library
For traditional on-campus students, the most obvious place to study is the campus library. So for you as an online student, it only makes sense to head to your own local library instead.
Libraries are ideal if you need a quiet space to concentrate – perfect for revising, reading, or getting stuck into a written assignment. You might also be surrounded by others who are focused, which can give you that extra nudge to stay on task.
You’ll usually find free Wi-Fi, computers you can use, and – of course – shelves of books to browse. Some even have cafés if you fancy a coffee while you work. No wonder it’s a firm favourite with many of our students.

Coffee shops
Speaking of caffeine hits, how could we not mention coffee shops? On weekdays, you’ll often find them filled with students and people working remotely. Some even offer a ‘work from here’ deal.
Free Wi-Fi… check! Comfy chairs… check! Cake… check! What more do you need?
The ambient buzz of a café can help boost creativity and focus. There’s that potential placebo effect of being around others who are working too – it can give your motivation a welcome lift. And of course, you’ve earned that slice of cake after a solid study session.

On your commute
One of the best things about studying online is that you can take your learning with you – wherever your day starts. Whether you’re on the train, the bus, or walking to work, your commute can be a great chance to slot in something small.
You might read a quick chapter of your module book, catch up on a video, or listen to a course podcast while on the go. Sure, you won’t be writing an essay or tackling a big assignment, but you can still make the most of that time.
Little moments like these can help keep your learning ticking over – and they’re a great way to ease into a productive mindset for the rest of the day.

Outdoors
Just like commuting, studying outdoors can be a great way to make the most of your time. A change of scene, some fresh air and natural light – it’s a simple way to lift your mood and break up your day.
You could head to a quiet park bench, relax in your garden with some reading, or take a walk while listening to a course podcast. A little movement, a little sunshine – and a fresh setting to help your mind reset.
Our online degrees give you the freedom to shape your studies around your life – whether that’s from home, a local café, or during your lunch break. With flexible start dates and dedicated support throughout, you can choose when and where you study in a way that works for you.

Co-working spaces
Co-working spaces are another solid option for online students. While many do charge a fee, you can sometimes find free or low-cost spaces in your area – and they often come with some brilliant perks.
You’ll usually get fast, secure Wi-Fi, access to facilities like printers or meeting rooms, and the chance to be around others who are focused and working hard. These spaces can also be great for networking or just feeling part of a productive, professional environment.
If you find it tough to focus at home, co-working spaces offer a refreshing change. There are fewer distractions (no laundry staring at you), and the atmosphere can give you a helpful sense of structure. Some spaces are even designed with creativity in mind – think bright, open rooms, plenty of natural light, and a buzz that helps you stay motivated.

Home
We couldn’t finish this blog without mentioning home. Some people love it, some don’t – but there’s no denying it’s the most convenient place to study.
You can roll out of bed, pop the kettle on, make some toast, and be studying within half an hour. And yes, you can absolutely stay in your pyjamas.
There are a few ways to make studying from home feel more productive. Creating a dedicated space – even just a corner – away from distractions can really help. Setting boundaries also makes a difference, whether that’s with yourself or the people you live with. Try not to study from bed, and let others know when you’re in study mode so things like chores can wait until later.
Remember: one study space doesn’t fit all!
Our advice to you is to mix it up. After speaking with our students, we’ve learnt that to stay productive you need to move around for different aspects of study. All study areas have pros and cons, and with the best will in the world, you’ll get a bit fed up and uninspired if you stay in one space.
Experiment with different locations to find what works best for you. Happy studying!
